Edmonds

Welcome to Edmonds, one of the most picturesque waterfront communities you will find in the state! Edmonds offers a unique blend of waterfront ambiance and small-town quality of life. It is one of the gateways to the Olympic Peninsula via the Edmonds-Kingston Ferry run.

Edmonds is located in the southwest corner of Snohomish County and is the oldest incorporated city within the county. This former logging camp is now a charming city complete with a lively and walkable downtown with many small shops and a marina and fishing pier. The city includes many wonderful beaches and parks as well as a community college and a very active arts community.

What’s your favorite Farmers Market?

Written by Renee Sayatovic

One of my favorite parts of summer is visiting the local Farmers Market.  I love to wander through them looking smelling the flowers and looking at the produce, bakery items and all the wonderful craft goods.  I know the seasons of summer by when the produce becomes available.

The first fruits of summer are the local strawberries, usually in June but sometimes they wait until July to make their appearance, depending on the spring rains. The strawberry season never lasts long but yummm, the berries are so delicious and juicy!  Salad greens, snap peas, asparagus, carrots, onions, radishes and summer squash start to make their appearance.

As the strawberries become in short supply the raspberries appear followed shortly by the blueberries (my favorite).  July also means summer fruits like cherries, apricots and peaches.   And oh, what vegetables: green beans, tomatoes, potatoes, mushrooms, cucumbers, the list goes on and on!

You know it is August and summer is winding down when the blackberries arrive followed by melons, plums, pears and apples, peppers, garlic and corn.

The great thing about Snohomish County is that you can find a Farmers Market open somewhere most days of the week.

Mukilteo starts the weekly rotation with their Waterfront Wednesday 3pm-7pm at Lighthouse Park.  Make a full afternoon/evening of your visit by also stopping by the Arts Center for glass blowing demonstration, The Red Cup Cafe for open mic night back to Lighthouse Park for outdoor movies.

Head east of I-5 for Thursdays offerings: The Snohomish Farmers Market runs from 3pm-7:30pm offering music as well as a plethoria of fresh goodies just a short walk from the downtown historic district. July 22nd is their first annual Fruit Pie-Baking Contest!

Later in the evening swing by Lake Stevens for their Thursday market, running 5pm to sunset at North Cove Park. Music at the Market runs 5:00pm-6:30pm at the Market Courtyard.

Saturdays are a great time to stop by downtown Edmonds for the Edmonds Museum Garden Market 9am-3pm. Stroll through the downtown shops and then to the market (or vice versa). One of the largest markets with over 120 vendors it is located on 5th Street from the fountain to Bell St and up Bell around Centenntial Plaza.

End (or begin) your weekly tour with the Everett Farmers Market at Port Gardner Landing at the marina from 11am-4pm. Take a break on the grassy area to listen to live music, 1pm-3pm on the corner stage or stroll down to the 10th street dock for the ferry to Jetty Island.

Summertime in Edmonds

Written by Leigh Buchan

Whoever says there is nothing to do in a small town during the summer has never spent time in Edmonds!

One of the charms of quaint seaside Edmonds is the Outdoor Summer Market. Meandering through the aisles visiting the numerous vendors one sees numerous luscious vegetables, herbs, fruit of all varieties including peaches, nectarines, pears, apricots, berries of all kinds, apples and more…all the while chatting with the vendors and hailing the many familiar faces of your neighbors along the way. One can barely get through the market without stopping and chatting with someone you know and haven’t seen for awhile. It is a welcoming experience and adds to the the friendliness of a small community in the midst of a large metropolitan city.
The Museum Garden Market runs every Saturday through October 3rd, 9am – 3pm, (except for August 15th due to the Taste of Edmonds – see below) on 5th Street from Main at the fountain up around Centennial Plaza. Wander through the many great shops in downtown Edmonds on your way to or from the market!

Head to the Frances Anderson Center for outdoor movie fun on Friday evening. Relax under the stars with friends and family – bring your blanket or lawn chair and enjoy great blockbusters on an inflatable screen starting at dusk! This Friday, July 31st is Ice Age 2 and next Friday, August 7th will be The Princess Bride. Both movies are free and refreshments will be sold.

How about a Moonlight Beach Adventure? See and touch some of the creatures that live in the deep off the marina. Volunteer scuba divers bring them to shore and return them unharmed to Puget Sound. Bring your flashlight and join the fun on Saturday, August 15th 7:30 -9:30pm at Marina Beach.

Feel the need for some music? The Edmonds Arts Commission presents Concerts in the Park Sunday afternoons at 3pm at Edmonds City Park, 3rd and Pine. Remaining concerts include folk music by Reilly and Maloney on August 2nd, blues group Dented Trucks on August 9th, jazz by Portage Bay Big Band on August 16th, swing and bluegrass with Back Burner on August 23rd and great march music with by Ballard Sendetary Sousa Band on August 30th.

And summer in Edmonds isn’t complete without the Taste of Edmonds, the second longest running food festival in Western Washington now in its 27th year! This year it will be held August 14th – 16th. Admission is $3 per person and free to those 12 and under.
Food, glorious food from the best restaurants in the area, arts and crafts and commercial booths, kids activities, several stages with live music, beer and wine gardens, roving artists and much, much more . . .
